Week 3 Post Surgery

Shoulder Surgery
Shoulder Surgery

It’s 3 weeks since my surgery and this week has been great. My shoulder feels better every day and I’m not in any real pain or discomfort with it now. Apart from lying on it, which still wakes me up, but day to day stuff like putting the kettle on and emptying the dish washer etc has been no problem. I’ve weaned off the brace now and have also stopped wearing it at night which is a major bonus as it’s not easy to sleep with!

My stage 1 physio exercises have been a bit redundant this week as the shoulder appears to have got better very quickly all on its own. I’ve been making sure I don’t over do it but have been using it pretty normally for things like showering and doing my hair which are the main things for me at the moment. I’m really looking forward to driving again which I can do in another week.

Turbo Trainer Set up
Turbo Trainer Set up

Exercise wise, I’ve been training regularly on my turbo trainer in the front room and managed to get a 20 minute sweat on today. I can rest my left hand on the bars without putting too much weight through it so it works pretty well. I just need to take time to build up some endurance in the arm again. I’ve also been out on several daily walks as I’ve got 2 dogs to walk and only 1 properly functioning arm so I’ve been taking them out separately and building the miles up as the arm improves. I can now walk 5 or 6 miles without feeling tired now which is an absolute joy when the weather is good.

I saw Prof Len Funk for my 3 week review today and we were both really pleased with progress. My range of movement is nearly full and I’m confident using my arm for every day tasks. He told me I’m healing “like an 18 year old rugby player” which will do me just fine! I had to promise not to over do it but to continue with rehab in a slow and steady fashion. I have no intention of doing anything other but it’s good to be on the mend so quickly.

Next week I’m planning on going swimming so that should be exciting to see if I can go in a straight line without sinking. I’m also planning on getting in touch with my Pilates clients to start classes again as soon as I can drive. I’m really looking forward to getting back to work now and can’t wait to see everyone again.

Hope you all have a lovely week.
