Your initial appointment will usually take approximately 45 minutes and will involve taking a detailed history of your problem, your general health and any medications you are taking.
You will be asked about what you feel the problem is and given time to explain your problem what influences it and how it started. We will listen to your explanation and may ask further questions to help us understand the nature and extent of your problem. This initial discussion usually takes around 15 minutes and you may wish to prepare for this by having a think about any relevant information (i.e. when / how did the problem start, any X-rays or scans, or any other treatments you may have had. Bringing a list of current medications can often be useful for people who take more than one medication.
Following a thorough history taking your Physiotherapist will ask your permission to visually and manually assess painful structures, to look at your posture, alignment and symmetry, to feel for any changes in joint shape, swelling or inflammation and to assess range and quality of movements, in order to make a well informed clinical diagnosis of the problem.
We will also provide hands-on treatment and / or exercise therapy within the first appointment to get you started on your road to rehab and recovery right away.
To facilitate a comfortable examination we recommend you bring shorts if you have a back or leg problem and for upper body problems you may prefer to wear a vest top when being examined.
